Short answer: Your company can pay up to the annual allowance, currently £60,000, into your pension, and it is usually deductible if the contribution is wholly and exclusively for the business. You can often carry forward unused allowance from the previous three years.

At a glance

Annual allowance £60,000
Carry forward Up to 3 previous years
Employer NI None on employer contributions

Why it is efficient

It reduces Corporation Tax and avoids employer NI, and the money goes straight into your pension without income tax at the time.

Watch-outs

Very large contributions can be questioned by HMRC if they are not commensurate with your duties, and the allowance tapers for high earners.
