When you must register

You must register within 30 days of the end of the month in which your taxable turnover goes over £90,000, or if you expect to pass it in the next 30 days alone. You can register voluntarily below that, which helps if your customers are VAT-registered businesses and you buy a lot of taxable supplies.

Choosing a VAT scheme

The standard scheme lets you reclaim VAT on purchases. The Flat Rate Scheme simplifies returns but is rarely better now, especially for low-cost service businesses where the limited cost trader rate of 16.5% applies. Cash accounting helps if clients pay late. We model the options before you register.

How our VAT service works

Your bookkeeping feeds the return. We review the figures, send you a summary to approve, submit through Making Tax Digital software and tell you the payment date and amount, so nothing is a surprise.

Common VAT mistakes we fix

  • Charging VAT late or on the wrong items
  • Reclaiming VAT without a valid invoice
  • Missing the 30-day registration deadline, which creates a back-dated bill
  • Applying the wrong rate to mixed supplies

Most companies file quarterly. You can ask to move to monthly returns if you are in a repayment position.
Usually not for service businesses, because the limited cost trader rate of 16.5% applies if you spend less than 2% of turnover on goods. We check this for you.
HMRC uses a points-based penalty system. Late submission points build up, and a financial penalty applies once you reach the threshold. Late payment adds interest and further penalties.
