Getting CIS right
Contractors must verify subcontractors, deduct tax and file monthly returns. Subcontractors can reclaim deductions through their company’s tax or payroll.
VAT reverse charge
For many construction services between VAT-registered businesses, the customer accounts for the VAT, which changes cash flow.
How CIS works in practice
Contractors deduct tax from payments to subcontractors at 20% if registered or 30% if not, and pay it to HMRC monthly. Subcontractors can reclaim deductions through their accounts or tax return, and qualifying firms can apply for gross payment status. VAT in construction can also involve the domestic reverse charge.

Questions from construction and cis
Straight answers to what directors in your sector ask us most.
Does a limited company need to register for CIS?
If it pays subcontractors for construction work, yes, as a contractor.
How do I reclaim CIS deductions?
Through your company's payroll or Corporation Tax return.
What is the CIS domestic reverse charge?
For most supplies of building services between VAT-registered contractors and subcontractors, the customer, not the supplier, accounts for the VAT. The subcontractor does not charge VAT on those invoices, and the contractor accounts for it on their return. It affects cash flow, so we make sure invoices and returns are correct.
How do I get gross payment status?
To receive payments without CIS deductions you must pass the business test, the turnover test and the compliance test with HMRC. Missed returns or payments can cost you gross status. We monitor your compliance record and prepare the application when you qualify.
Can I reclaim CIS tax deducted from my payments?
Yes. Deductions made by contractors are credited to your company, and any excess over your Corporation Tax and PAYE liabilities can be repaid. We include CIS credits in your accounts and claim repayments on your behalf.
How much do accountants for construction and cis cost?
Our fixed monthly packages start at £45.83 + VAT, and the price depends on turnover and the services you need. You get a clear quote before you commit.
Can you take over from my current accountant?
Yes. We handle the clearance letter, record transfer and HMRC agent authorisation at no extra cost on a monthly package.
Do I need to meet you in person?
No. Everything can be done online, and you are welcome to visit one of our South London offices by appointment.
